From school to workplace - my week of work experience

First things first, I’m Maja a 17-year-old student in year 12 from Heckmondwike Grammar School juggling maths, economics and French A-levels, and last week I had the incredible opportunity to spend some time with the talented team at Source.

I learnt so much and gained such amazing experience and knowledge that I know will not only be useful to me when I begin my marketing career, but in life in general I learned how to manage my time to effectively complete all my tasks, and developed problem solving skills. Excitingly, I already know where I can implement these skills, both academically and in my personal life. In terms of how it will help me with my A-levels, I can now organise my revision time more easily and use my new-found problem-solving skills when completing a task in class. Outside of the classroom, I will use my new skills to adapt more comfortably and more time efficiently when presented with opportunities in the future.

Let me begin by saying how fortunate I am to have worked alongside such a remarkable company and its amazing people in the office! But more about my experience; I want to tell you about the environment I worked in, where I spent my week and who I worked with.

So let me set the scene, think cutting-edge, results-driven, and full of energy! That’s what should pop into your head when you hear ‘Source’. I definitely did when Martha Phillips (director of Source MC) called me up to say I would be able to do work experience with her in March. I was so excited and grateful to start work experience with Martha and the rest of the Source team.   I have discovered more about what the company stands for: creative marketing, PR, and results! Can’t get better than that.

During my week in the office, I had the opportunity to work on a variety of tasks from assisting with content creation to analysing media strategies and meeting clients.

On Monday (after a lonnngggg bus journey, stuck in traffic) I came in ready and prepared for any tasks that the Source team were going to set for me. Notebook and pen ready in hand, I sat down with Martha and Lewis Scott (account manager at Source) as they explained what the plan for the week was.

During the meeting, Martha and Lewis outlined and described in detail the key projects for the week, which included creating social media content and the accompanying artwork, writing press information and accompanying Lewis at a client meeting

I was particularly excited about the meeting as it would mean I’d be able to experience and deal with real-life clients, understand more about the marketing world and observe how Source presents ideas and handles feedback.

As the week unfolded, and I completed the key tasks, I learnt and developed my skills and also overcame difficulties that I faced with tasks that I didn’t have much experience with. One of the challenges that I faced was learning how to use Canva to its maximum potential for social media artwork designs. I had used Canva for my Creative I-Media GCSE in 2024, so I used the skills that I developed during that time as a foundation. However. I quickly found out that creating designs for a professional marketing agency required a deeper understanding of branding, target audience and consistency – especially when it came to fonts, colours and design style.

Another challenge, which was something completely new to me, was writing a press release. Planning and writing clear and accurate press releases was very demanding, as I had to meet the clear writing style as well as making sure I included all the relevant information needed. However, overcoming the challenges helped me understand the importance of tone of voice and most importantly accuracy, while developing my writing skills

That being said, accompanying Lewis to a client meeting was most definitely one of the highlights of my week. Watching how to talk to clients and learning how to deal with feedback was really eye-opening. Since I’ve never been to a meeting like that before, I wasn’t sure how it would go. But after seeing how well it was handled, I now feel more confident about running a meeting with a client in the future

Another highlight of the week was going out for lunch with Martha and Lewis. We went to The Box, which (according to Lewis) has the most ‘bussin’ burgers and chips – whilst discussing my future plans and how I could get achieve them. This was such a great experience as it got us out of the office, and I got to know Martha and Lewis a lot more. I learnt that Lewis likes to use the most ‘up-to-date vocab’ and he likes to call himself the Alpha Sigma! I don’t think anyone in the office will ever hear the end of it…

Reflecting on this experience, I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do my work experience at Source. From this, I’ve developed further practical knowledge and skills that are already helping me with my A-levels, especially in areas such as communication, creative thinking and problem-solving.

Before the week, I wasn’t sure of what I really wanted to do in the future and what career I wanted to pursue, fortunately, I now have a much clearer understanding of what I want to do as I know more about what the marketing and PR sector is all about

I would like to do a degree apprenticeship within marketing and communications in 2026 after my A-levels. But more than anything, I’m leaving Source with a sense of inspiration and motivation to continue learning and growing in this field.

Overall, my week at Source was an unforgettable experience, and one that has taught me valuable lessons and enabled me to contribute to real work projects. I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned and look forward to seeing where this journey takes me.

Once again, thank you so much to everyone at Source for being such a great team, supporting me during my week, and for being able to share your knowledge and expertise. I truly appreciate the opportunity, and I’m looking forward to any future opportunities within the team!
